What is ‘Day Zero’?
According to sources and multiple incidents from around the world, Day Zero is the day when a city’s taps run completely dry, forcing people to stand in queues to collect their daily “quota” of water. Day Zero has been prominently occurring in multiple cities such as Cape Town and Chennai, India. Many countries such as Rome have also had a near miss in reaching said Day Zero.
Analysing the given data on the water situation globally, it is no bolt from the blue that our blue resource is rapidly depleting, and that Day Zero might not be far off for us. Since most of us have access to a bulbous flow of water each time we open a tap, we have turned a blind eye towards the severity of water scarcity in today’s world. Unlimited access to water has caused us to think that we are somehow obligated to receive water forever, while on the other hand, there are cities which are struggling endlessly to prevent Day Zero from occurring. The report that was prepared under the ministry of water resources had cited rising population, rapid urbanisation, industrialisation and inadequate rainfall as reasons for sharp decline in groundwater volume in the country. Housing a population of close to 1.5 billion people and striving to provide adequate resources for all of them is no mean feat, hence it is only fair that we take up some preventive measures to help conserve water and be a responsible generation by leaving behind a resourceful planet for generations to come.
The first “Day Zero”
The first glimpse that mankind had of said “Day Zero” took place in Cape Town, South Africa in
2017. The water crisis in Cape Town peaked during this time when all the major water supplying
dams had dried out and officially declared Cape Town an absolutely dry city.
How do we avoid another “Day Zero”?
Water conservation can be done on a large as well as small scale. Before we delve into the large scale ways to save water, let us have a look at how we can save water from our very own doorstep.

- Toilet tank bag installation
As bizarre as it sounds, placing a filled water bottle in the tank of your toilet can enable you to save a considerable amount of water with each flush. This is called a Toilet Tank Bag and it displaces the water with each flush made, and therefore reduces the amount of water consumed.
Here are some of the small scale ways to conserve water. It is good to think big, but sometimes home is a good place to start practising what we preach. Let’s all join hands in this fight against depleting groundwater and the shadows of Day Zero looming over our shoulders by saving water in all ways possible.
